The Pressures of Managing as a High-Performance Woman.

On the back of ‘International Women’s Day 2024’ - It is interesting to reflect on the juxtaposition of this time in history for women.

On the surface there has never been a better time in history to be a professional woman. With greater recognition, opportunity and equality than ever before…

Leaders like Yvette Hanson and Valentina Vescovi are dynamic women who bring enormous energy and empathy. They have much to manage both personally and professionally they lead people and teams and they also lead their families.

However, this has come with different stresses through a ‘one size fits all approach’ to professional performance that does not take into account the unique physical, chemical and emotional differences between men and women. In addition as Gill Whitty-Collins calls it the ‘invisible force field’ also still exists at the senior most level when it it comes to gender and how this gap impacts on the behaviour of women as they look to advance.

‘There is so much more to life than just increasing speed.’ - Mahatma Gandhi

On the back of I took time to reflect on these insights Kirstin Daly (Chartered MCIPD, CPHR) shared a book ‘Rushing Women’s Syndrome’ - by Dr. Libby Weaver - The focus is the emotional, physical toll that the ‘constant rushing’ has on women.

I am interested in these insights...

I am a husband, father leader and coach for high-performance women all over the world… My want is to be better than before!

Dr. Weaver is a nutritional biochemist - She delves into how a stressful lifestyle can negatively affect various areas of health, including the nervous system, adrenal glands, reproductive system, digestive system, and emotional well-being.

She identifies the syndrome with symptoms like feeling overwhelmed, reliance on caffeine, cravings for sugar, guilt, and difficulty saying no. The book aims to provide readers with practical solutions to reduce stress and lead a more balanced life.

One of the key insights I took away from the book is the recognition that as a result of modern life's demands, where technology and societal expectations push women to do more at the expense of their health. It brings to light the mismatch between our fast-moving lives and our body's more primal reactions to stress.

It made me reflect on real solutions for restoring health, emphasising the importance of questioning your beliefs and behaviours to make lasting changes whilst maintaining a focus on professional growth and fulfilment.

Melda Yasar Cebe understands the pressures of been a high-performance woman.

These are challenges that Victoria Tipper , Olga Cassidy and Melda Yasar Cebe have experienced and I lean deeply into their own stories and experiences as leaders and coaches. I love that they and all of our coaches have a genuine focus on the rituals that enable ‘genuine high-performance life’ that focuses on the unique strengths and composition of each individual?

Olga Cassidy managing the expectations of as a high performance coach whilst also managing a young family.

I love the science of understanding the biochemical, nutritional and emotional factors driving our bodies to behave a certain ways - This is a space where Victoria Tipper thrives. "Rushing Women's Syndrome" is both a diagnosis and a call to action - It urges women to take control of their health by slowing down, reassessing their priorities and implementing sustainable rituals for better health, well-being and sustainable high performance. As the science improves it is essential that we as leaders keep on looking to understand and embrace the differences of each individual and of course our gender differences as well in order to create inclusive high performance environments.

Victoria Tipper - Nobody has changed my relationship with stress more than Vicki.

As Gill Whitty-Collins ’s emphasises the opportunity in building more gender diverse leadership teams is a performance enhancing decision with teams that have greater gender diversity consistently outperform those without.

However, to truly leverage this opportunity we must continue to create environments that enable all people to thrive.

  1. Can you share what you see as the biggest challenge for the modern professional woman?
  2. What is your number one ritual that enables you to maintain your well being?
  3. How do you think we can more effectively manage the ‘both and’ nature of well being and high performance for women taking into account the factors that make them unique?
  4. What do you think organisations and leaders can do better when it comes to building thriving, strengths based environments?
