“We join the United Nations forum on digital education and gender equity”

?FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MARCH 6, 2023

In 2023, access to technology is largely recognized as a benefit for education and economic opportunities. However, these opportunities are not all created equal. Women and girls continue to face a digital divide: with lower rates of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics labor participation rates (women make up 19.9% of the global STEM labor market) and higher rates of experiencing digital harassment and gender-based cyberviolence (UN Women, 2022).

?Over the next two weeks, Stephanie Hodge, Senior UN advisor/International Program Evaluation Consultant and Canadian, a former technical staff of UNDP 1994-2004 and UNICEF 2008-2014 (Sustainable Development Issues), a current Guilford, Conn USA resident, will join policymakers, government officials, and activists from around the world at this year's United Nations Commission on the Status of Women?in New York City. This year’s forum will focus on the opportunities and challenges for women and girls in education in the digital age of innovation and technological change. The review theme also includes rural women and girls.

The United Nations (UN) Commission on the Status of Women is the principal intergovernmental body exclusively dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls. This year, the annual UN headquarters-based conference will take place in person for the first time since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

CFUW (Canadian Federation of University Women) is a non-partisan women's organization with Special Consultative Status with the UN. CFUW is sending a delegation of representatives from several provinces across Canada to join the UN Member States, UN agencies, and other accredited civil society organizations to discuss the progress and gaps?in the inclusion of women and girls in?environmental and climate change policies.

???????The Pandemic experiences shared by countries, online school innovators and providers, and the participants (teachers and students) about the rapid adoption of online education raised questions of quality and access to education online for all and particularly about standards and assessment framework for equity and inclusion: gender responsiveness, child safety, and individual needs-based learning and environments, social and emotional learning (SEL), and pedagogy - teacher capacities for online inclusive education”.

???????As the Climate Change impacts include even more disruptions in traditional schooling, as the online education and platforms take off, it is time to think about communicating global online education standards and assessments.”?says Stephanie Jill Hodge, CFUW delegate 2023.

?Since the Commission was established in 1946, civil society organizations like CFUW have taken a leading role in strengthening political commitments to gender equality and advancing the dialogue on the empowerment of women and girls across the world. The two-week conference is expected to culminate with a concrete set of commitments on achieving gender equality in the context of climate change for governments to implement at the international, national, regional, and local levels.

Stephanie Jill Hodge looks forward to sharing her experiences and new information from the UN forum with members of her networks, UN, government officials, and community leaders globally.?To learn more about joining CFUW and gender equality in Canada, visit?cfuw.org. or To learn more about Stephanie Jill Hodge), visit (The Linked In - www.dhirubhai.net/in/stephanie-hodge-5350a08/.
