SANTA FE, N.M. [July 19, 2024] — Blue Rain Gallery is thrilled to announce the unveiling of a new collection of mixed patina paintings on metal panels by one-of-a-kind artist Nathan Bennett. Renowned for his innovative techniques, Bennett masterfully elevates the art of patina, applying diverse elemental patinas to bronze and aluminum panels to create breathtaking imagery. This captivating collection of Bennett’s latest masterpieces, titled “Low Light Conditions,” will be on display from September 27 to October 11, 2024. The exhibition kicks off with an artist reception on opening night, Friday, September 27, from 5-7 pm.
Nathan Bennett carries a torch in both a literal and figurative sense. He wields a handheld blowtorch to meticulously “paint” hot-process patina—a delicate and intensive discipline he has been perfecting for over two decades—and he carries a torch for the medium itself, continually pushing its boundaries and expanding its possibilities. Bennett's relentless innovation and dedication shine brighter than ever in "Low Light Conditions." The collection of approximately ten new pieces offers a captivating, dynamic experience that highlights Bennett’s mastery of patina painting and sets ever-higher standards in the art form.
“I’m venturing into new dimensions for this collection,” the artist shares. “Collectors have been asking for larger pieces, and painting at this scale has been very exciting. I’ve had to reinvent aspects of my technique, which is challenging, but I’m no longer constrained by the smaller panels. I’m broadening my horizons.”
As Bennett deepens his exploration of the medium, his innovative approach offers new contexts for both the artist and the audience. Each piece in "Low Light Conditions" invites viewers to engage with the art from multiple perspectives, enhancing their experience both physically and symbolically.
“When you see the paintings in person, it’s as if they’re dancing,” Bennett says of his work. “The metal is rippling and flowing; there’s always movement in the composition. When I’m working on a piece, I view it from all directions—I spin them as I work. The colors and reflections of the light on the finished pieces change depending on where you stand, creating an unreal, dreamlike quality that makes the artwork both ethereal and engaging.”
