Jerusalem - Wednesday, January 4th, 2023
Israeli-based artist, Ana Kogan, partnering with Iranian American filmmaker, Hooman Khalili, who produced and helped oversee the design, have together created a "Woman Life Freedom" moving mural, supporting the people protesting in Iran. This mural will initially be displayed opposite the Hadar Mall in Jerusalem.
After leading two "Freedom Rallies for Iran" in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, Vice Mayor of Jerusalem, Fleur Hassan-Nahoum, and Journalist, Emily Schrader reached out to Hooman, after seeing one of his Instagram posts supporting the revolutionary Iranian women. "We wanted to show our support and solidarity for the women of Iran fighting for their basic human rights. We want the Persian people to know that we in Israel stand with them against a brutal Islamic regime that is causing most of the conflict in our region," says Vice Mayor Fleur Hassan-Nahoum.
The golden moving mural is being displayed in Talpiot, Jerusalem, in cooperation with El Halev and MyPwr Ltd. "They are the perfect partners and our missions align. El Halev and MyPwr are dedicated to the prevention of physical, emotional and sexual violence. Yehudit Sidikman, co-founder of El HaLev and CEO of MyPwr Ltd says, "it is at the site of this empowerment partnership that we are displaying this mural today; to reach out in solidarity to our sisters in Iran, and to awaken all humans on the planet we share to the devastating effects of violence against women. We are all proud to display the mural from our rooftop at the El Halev/MyPwr headquarters in Talpiot."
Those who visit the El Halev/MyPwr building can see the banner which is 3.5 meters wide and over 6 meters long. The banner features the faces of four women murdered by the Islamic Regime: Mahsa Amini, Sarina Esmailzadeh, Fereshteh Ahmadi and Nika Shakarami. The background of the Mural is Gold, with two emblems. The First is the Lion and the Sun symbol dates back to 12th century Persia, where it gained popularity as an ancient astrological sign of the sun in the house of Leo - which likely represented Power and Royalty. This symbol was the center of the Iranian Flag pre-July 1980. The second symbol is a woman holding a sword and riding a lion, to honor this woman-led revolution. "The reason I chose gold for the background is, traditionally in Iranian culture, the color gold stands for Power. I believe that even in death, these four women have the power to make a difference and inspire others to keep the fight for basic human rights alive in Iran. Their deaths remind us of the overwhelming injustice the citizens of Iran face every minute of every day" says Hooman.
