HOLLYWOOD, CA – February 10th 2023 –
A popular truism in the filmmaking business with the bite of truth is: For an actor, expect it to take ten years to get your first real movie role. For a writer, expect twenty years to get a script made. For a director, keep dreaming. Dotan Baer – actor, producer, founder and owner of the Associated Artists Group – has kept his dream alive and worked the business every day. Now, he’s set to take a seat in the director’s chair. In 2023, he’ll direct his first movie.
“I finally did it because I’m finally doing it,” smiles Baer. “About time, right? And to me, the best part is that I’m going to be taking a lot of my numerous and very talented friends on this journey with me. I tell them, you’ve believed in me all these years, and I believe in you. This project is going to be a rare thing – a deliriously happy set.”
Dotan Baer has worked on enough sets to have soaked up about every lesson to learn about the moviemaking process, and he plans to put that hard-earned knowledge to good use when he directs his first low-budget indie feature film. It’s a giant leap for filmkind in a career that began when he played a Marine in a commercial for Aaron Spelling Productions and has now spanned 27 years.
“I’m former-Army. I called that my first acting stretch... playing a Marine,” he laughs. His early screen adventures also included being the “Mascot” in Any Given Sunday. Baer trusted that donning the mascot costume would have its rewards, and it did. “It introduced me personally to Oliver Stone, Jim Brown, Jamie Foxx, Matthew Modine... and Al Pacino. Would any fledgling
actor not want to get in that costume?”

The jobs Baer has performed on and for production companies runs the gamut from development to post. He recalls, “I’ve consulted A-list writers on their storylines and scripts. Been a prop master, armorer, and second-unit director for feature films and network TV. I’ve been hired as coordinator, trainer, and small arms weapons master; and worked on artwork and motion capture—that was pretty cool, too.”
Today, having arrived combat ready, with a 27-year film education, Dotan Baer is busy storyboarding his directorial debut film—a seriously fun horror-thriller with sci-fi and action elements. His concept is one designed specifically to attract novice and experienced film professionals on a collaborative, enjoyable content-creation journey.
“Having taught countless actors over the years and countless crew members, it’s truly heartening to receive the votes of confidence I’m getting from everybody in my extensive industry networks. Of course, I’m expecting this to be the first of many films... it’s really its own studio we will be making. Associated Artists Group’s goal as a production and distribution house is to bring stories to life utilizing the talents of as many military veterans as possible, to tell stories that will relate to all.”
Dotan Baer has strived through nearly three decades to be a leader who provides hope and creates opportunity. “I don’t need awards. If my film can be a springboard to launch careers, that will be the highest honor,” mused Dotan.
