Press Aggressive Like A Guardiola Team
When my players lose the ball I encourage them to press aggressively to regain the ball as quickly as possible – as Pep Guardiola says win it back in 6 seconds or you'll have to drop into a defensive shape and give the momentum back to the opposition.
With an aggressive press players are trying to win the ball high up the pitch using the press as an attacking tool that doubles up as a defending strategy. When I train my players I want them to understand how to quickly win the ball and then turn that possession into attacl by exploiting space as the transition takes place.
I work with the players in this tactic right from pre-season and regularly revisit sessions throughout the season to remind my players how important it is. High pressing is tiring and puts players under match-like pressure during training – try to get all your players at a high tempo to increase the understanding and effort required.
Things you need to coach for this style of play are players understanding the correct body shape in pressing and the triggers the players should react to. Communication whether?they all press together or to wait for the opposition to move the ball into vulnerable areas. In pressing they should accelerate and decelerate into pressing positions and when the ball is won quickly counter attack.
