How we discovered the Power of?Preselling
Dr Nik: I first learnt about the power of pre-selling when I wrote the book, "BrandOvation: How Germany Won the World Cup of Nation Branding."
?As a consultant to corporate clients like Metropolitan, I was focused on empowering employees to become brand ambassadors when the 2006 World Cup caught my attention. This event united Germans from both the East and West, and in turn, reunited Germany with the rest of the world.
I was so inspired that I took a prolonged leave of absence for nearly five months to research how this massive change management program had come about.
In early 2007, South African President Thabo Mbeki hosted a press conference at the Union Buildings to announce his vision for hosting the 2010 FIFA World Cup?. This was when I had the good fortune of sharing a prelaunch copy of my book with the editor of South Africa's leading business daily.
The editor subsequently asked me to write a piece about the successful sectors of the German rebranding campaign. This marked the start of my journey to building a leadership profile in nation branding, which led to opportunities such as writing for Business Day, co-hosting a TV show on CNBC for three years, and being featured five times on the award-winning TV show, Carte Blanche.
For more than five years, I did not have to market or advertise my services, as the leadership profile I had built up in the media was enough to pre-sell my brand and attract clients to reach out to me. It is a testament to the power of pre-selling and the importance of building a strong leadership profile in your field.
Yathin: My 20-year corporate career was with large established brands - the likes of Eskom, First Rand Group (Rand Merchant Bank), Anglo American, AngloGold Ashanti and BNP Paribas. These corporations were all well-established and well-known in the market, but (save for Eskom) were in competitive industries, so we had to constantly strive to stay ahead of the competition in order to win and sustain market share.

For a large part of my career, I was focused on new business development, and it was at BNP Paribas where I really learned about the value of Preselling. When I joined the SA branch as the Head of Metals & Mining, the bank was relatively unknown in South Africa, and not a formidable competitor in the South African financial services industry.
It was here I really got to practice Preselling. I did this through the hosting of events such as dinners, conferences, golf days etc. for my clients. In doing so, I built a strong network with decision-makers mainly in the financial services, energy and mining sectors, and it was through the power of conversations that I was able to demonstrate and share my though leadership in these sectors. We as a team, under my leadership, grew the business unit’s annualized revenues 9x over a 6-year period.
In 2017 I took the leap of faith into entrepreneurship, and now as a business owner I practice Preselling on LinkedIn daily. I seek to establish myself as a thought leader every day, focused on growing my eminence as a trusted Leadership Coach.
