President's Call for Action: Kazakhstan's Push for Clean Water in Almaty

President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev during a developmental meeting in Almaty, highlighted the pressing issue of ensuring quality drinking water within the city. He emphasized the urgent need to address this concern, as reported by Zakon.kz.

According to a press release from Akorda on August 18th, the President emphasized that access to clean water is a critical challenge not only for Almaty but for the entire country. The city has been plagued by frequent water supply disruptions due to recurring incidents, demanding immediate resolution.

President Tokayev drew attention to the escalating sedimentation and turbidity issues in rivers, which present a significant problem. In late July, drinking water supply was restricted in the Medeu district due to these issues. This situation understandably sparked dissatisfaction among the city's residents.

Addressing the water-related challenges, President Tokayev outlined key tasks for rectifying the situation. These include the operational launch of the Kargala water intake facility by the end of October, a project that faced delays due to contractors. Additionally, a comprehensive review of the city's water management system is set to take place. Hydrogeological surveys will identify underground water sources to supply the upper part of Almaty, while the completion of four wells and reservoirs at the "Balkhash" station is also in progress, according to the press release.

Earlier reports revealed that following the incident in the Medeu district, the Almaty city administration initiated a new project aimed at managing unforeseen emergencies. This initiative is designed to ensure consistent water supply to micro-districts in the southern part of the region.
