President bats for women getting due respect and dignity & hopes they will excel further in every field

Amid the outcry over the spate of incidents of crime and violence against women, President of India Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday made a strong case for women getting due respect and dignity especially during the present Amrut Kal and when the Bharat will be celebrating the centenary. ‘’Being a Mother of Democracy, people from other countries follow us. It is everyone’s responsibility and we should work together so that women will be respected and live with dignity and honour. Change is needed in society’s outlook towards women. Women have made strides in every field and they should excel further. With this the development Yatra should continue uninterrupted,’’she said amid thunderous applause. The President was speaking at the centenary year function of the Maharashtra Legislative Council at the Vidhan Bhavan.?

The President hailed a slew of welfare, development and educational schemes including the Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana launched by the Maharashtra Government saying that such schemes will help them to prosper, progress and lead in every sphere. ‘’Without the social, educational and economic development of women, a country's development would not be possible.?

In a rare gesture before starting a formal speech, the President of India remembered Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and made everyone shout in one voice Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Ki Jai. This deserves importance especially amid the raging controversy over the fall of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s statue at Rajkot Fort in Malvan from Sindhudurg district. Her move to make a special mention of the Maratha warrior also comes days after the Prime Minister Narendra Modi apologised and sought forgiveness following the collapse of the statue.

The President said that the Maharashtra Legislative Council has given expression to the hopes and aspirations of the people of Maharashtra. It has played the role of a responsive Upper Chamber. She appreciated the contribution of all the present and former members of the Council for their contributions.

?‘’The Maharashtra Legislative Council has strengthened democratic values by establishing a tradition of healthy debate and dialogue. Also, the members of the Council have made a remarkable contribution to public welfare. The former Chairman of this Council VS Page had conceived the Employment Guarantee Scheme. A similar system to that scheme was later adopted at the national level in the form of 'MGNREGA',’’ said the President.

?The President said that the Rajya Sabha in Parliament and the Legislative Councils in the Legislative Assemblies, where there are two Houses, are called the House of the Elders. Along with the minimum age limit being higher in these Houses, representation of more experienced members is often seen in the Elder Houses. Such Elders have set many good examples and enriched the parliamentary system and the work culture of the legislature. She expressed confidence that the Maharashtra Legislative Council will further strengthen this tradition.

?‘’Maharashtra has been presenting examples of social, economic, cultural, and spiritual progress to the entire country. According to the Economic Survey of the year 2023-24, Maharashtra ranks first in the country in terms of State GDP,’’ said the President. She appreciated the members of the Legislature, the State Government, and the people of Maharashtra for this achievement and expressed confidence that the development journey of Maharashtra will continue to move forward at a rapid pace. She wished a bright future for the people of Maharashtra.
