Preserving Tradition: Empowering Assam's Weavers through the Art of Natural Dyeing
ICCo India
A development organization working to achieve ‘Sustainable Livelihoods’ and ‘Justice and Dignity for All’ in India.
The handloom sector in Assam is synonymous with cultural heritage and craftsmanship, reflecting the deep-rooted traditions of the region. Natural dyeing holds a special place among the many techniques that sustain this age-old practice, employed by artisans across the state, and merges artistry with environmental consciousness, offering an eco-friendly alternative to synthetic dyes and chemicals.
A Sustainable Craft Rooted in Nature
Natural dyeing is an intricate process where colors are extracted from locally available natural resources such as plants, leaves, fruits, roots, and flowers. These organic materials are transformed into vibrant hues, used to color the yarns that will later be woven into traditional Assamese garments, such as Mekhela Chadors and Gamochas. This practice not only connects artisans to the environment but also promotes sustainable fashion, reducing harmful impacts on the ecosystem.
The Process: From Plant to Fabric
The process of natural dyeing is labor-intensive and requires a deep understanding of both plant biology and the chemistry of color. Artisans first collect the dye-producing plants, which could range from turmeric roots for yellow, indigo leaves for blue, or lac insects for red. The raw materials are then processed through boiling, soaking, or fermenting to extract the dye.
Once the dye is ready, cotton, silk, or other natural fibers are submerged in the dye baths, allowing the yarn to absorb the vibrant hues. Artisans carefully monitor this process to achieve the desired intensity and consistency. Often, mordants—natural minerals or plant-based additives—are used to bind the colors to the fabric, ensuring they remain vivid and long-lasting.
Empowering Artisans Through Training and Capacity Building
In its commitment to promoting sustainable livelihoods and preserving traditional crafts, ICCo has been at the forefront of reviving the art of natural dyeing in Assam’s handloom sector. This initiative aligns with ICCo's broader mission to support rural artisans, particularly women, by providing them with the necessary skills, resources, and market linkages to thrive in eco-friendly textile production.
ICCo's approach to promoting natural dyeing is rooted in hands-on training and capacity-building programs designed to equip artisans with the knowledge and technical expertise required for natural dye production. These training sessions focus on all aspects of the dyeing process, from identifying and sourcing locally available plants and natural materials to mastering extraction techniques and applying natural dyes to different textiles.

Through collaboration with local experts and industry professionals, ICCo has been able to introduce improved methods of natural dyeing, enhancing both the quality and durability of the dyed fabrics. The training also incorporates the use of natural mordants, which help bind the dyes to the fibers, ensuring vibrant and long-lasting colors.
Sustainable Practices and Environmental Impact
By encouraging the use of organic and renewable sources for dyes, ICCo is helping to reduce the environmental footprint of textile production. Artisans are trained to use sustainable practices throughout the dyeing process, from cultivating dye-producing plants to minimizing water waste and chemical runoff.
The adoption of natural dyeing not only fosters environmental stewardship but also creates new economic opportunities for rural communities. Many of the plants used for dye extraction can be grown locally, providing artisans with an additional source of income. This holistic approach ensures that artisans are not only preserving traditional craft methods but also contributing to sustainable resource management.
Looking ahead, ICCo aims to scale its natural dyeing initiative by expanding training programs and creating stronger networks between artisans, suppliers, and markets. The organization continues to advocate for the broader adoption of sustainable practices within Assam’s handloom sector, with a focus on preserving cultural heritage while addressing modern environmental challenges.
