Preserving our Past
Cattle Camp at Bommer Canyon Preserve, a well-known a hiking destination, picnic area, and event rental facility, has reopened following renovations.

Preserving our Past

Discover the renovated Cattle Camp at Bommer Canyon Preserve during Wilderness Access Days on the third Saturday of each month.

Throughout much of the 1900s, thousands of cattle roamed the Irvine Ranch. In spring, cowboys would round them up and enjoy a barbecue at the Cattle Camp in Bommer Canyon. The cattle and cowboys are long gone, but the historic, rustic charm remains at the 15-acre space, which has been enhanced by the City and renamed Cattle Camp at Bommer Canyon Preserve, formerly Bommer Canyon Community Park.

For years, the Cattle Camp served as a unique spot for weddings, family reunions, and other gatherings. But due to its age and outdoor exposure, the site was in need of repairs.

After gathering extensive community feedback, City staff launched the Bommer Canyon Community Park Rehabilitation Project in 2018, with a focus on restoring the Cattle Camp area. Construction on the site began in March 2021.

With a focus on the organizational mission of existing to serve the community in the continual pursuit of a City that offers an exceptional quality of life, staff worked diligently to overcome challenges and ensure the project was successfully completed.

City of Irvine staff, including employees in the Community Services and Project Delivery & Sustainability departments, were dedicated to ensuring the Cattle Camp at Bommer Canyon Preserve project was a success.

Covered by a lush sycamore canopy, the newly restored Cattle Camp maintains a modern yet rustic design and features:

  • A 15-acre event space stage and backstage room.
  • Newly renovated Chuck Wagon kitchen with modern amenities.
  • An updated restroom building.
  • New picnic tables and ADA accessible pathways.
  • Restoration of the iconic Bommer Canyon Water Tower.

A special thank you goes out to staff in the Community Services and the Project Delivery & Sustainability departments for their commitment to preserving Irvine’s history and bringing the Cattle Camp back to life.

Members of the Project Delivery & Sustainability Department attended the reopening event for the Cattle Camp at Bommer Canyon Preserve after seeing the renovation project through to completion.

Community Services staff took part in the reopening celebration of Cattle Camp at Bommer Canyon Preserve.

I worked shifts at the old BCCP in my time with the City of Irvine throughout the 2010’s. I know many great memories were made there both for staff and patrons. The renovations look great and I can’t wait to see it in person!

I have been a regular user of this facility as young dad taking my family to their first over night camping trips to a more mature dad regularly mountain biking the trails around the Cattle Camp. The City of Irvine has done an amazing job of revitalizing this beautiful place and make it open to the public. Keep up the great work.
