Preserving Memories!
When the girls were young, and we were struggling to get out the door in time for Sunday School; I found that hitting the Pillow Donuts next to Kroger at corner of Old Canton Road and Lake Harbour Drive was one "moment" where time stood still, the girls got to pick a donut and a "pig in the blanket," and I got to support a local business. As frantic as I was about getting to church on time, this was one of those "memories" that will stick with me.
Time has passed, the girls are grown up, and I find myself hitting the Burger King drive thru on the way to work and occasionally considering one of the big chain donut shops simply out of convenience. After visiting Pillow this morning, it was good to see the same Asian American GENTLEman who has been there all this time with his kind demeanor.
This time, though, I noticed in his little cubby area a "self-help" book entitled "Do You Need A Lawyer: Chapter 7, Chapter 11, and other legal questions?" The gentleman behind the counter didn't notice that I noticed it and I don't get the impression that the book was conveniently positioned to catch my eye for a much more subtle strategy. I can only imagine how the pandemic has impacted a place like this where probably delivery via Grubhub, Waitr, etc. didn't really matter.
Nevertheless, I'm going to make a concerted effort towards RE-making this particular Pillow Donuts my first choice for a breakfast or sweet snack and try to avoid the slick Sunday paper advertising coupons for the deal for a dozen. It's only a couple of bucks and to some degree will help preserve a pretty special memory that I'm sure other dads can relate to. #My2Cents
