David Best is an internationally renowned sculptor and installation artist widely known as the “Temple Builder” for Burning Man. He has created 8 temple structures since his first in 2000, all of which were burned on the final day of the annual festival. His works have helped brand Burning Man as one of the largest and most profound large-scale art exhibits in the world, with his temples often being the largest structures at the event. (In 2004, the Temple of Stars was a quarter mile long and almost 120’ high.) His works are displayed at many museums, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Oakland Museum, the San Jose Museum of Art, and the di Rosa Preserve in Napa. The sculptures are usually made of recycled wood sheets, often the leftovers from toy making, as is this rare piece now being offered for sale.
David Best built 5 altars in the Black Rock Desert, where Burning man is always held, during Burning Man 2011 for a Black Rock Arts Foundation event. Of the 5 altars, 3 were burned, one was transported and remains in Hawaii, and one was sent to Los Angeles. Altar 1 of 5 was gifted to Athena Demos for all her hard work as a community leader, regional contact, and a founding board member of the Los Angeles League of Arts, the regional non-profit organization that creates local Burning Man events in LA. With David's blessing, Ms. Demos is now offering this very rare piece of art for sale, in order to raise funds to preserve her home.
The altar stands 9 feet tall, is 8’ 6” wide at the base and is 1’ 8” deep. It is made of lightweight wood. The piece is being offered for $12,000 through LA Art Dealer Dale Youngman. The oversize sculpture currently resides near DTLA and is available for pick up, or for shipping at buyers expense.
