Presentation of the Series "Childhood and Adolescence: Building a Better Future"

This is the first in a series of newsletters dedicated to exploring the challenges and opportunities related to childhood and adolescence in the Basque Country, Spain and the world. Please make sure you subscribe to Basque Country Childhood

As President of UNICEF in the Basque Country , it is an honour for me to inaugurate this new series of newsletters that aim to explore in depth crucial issues related to childhood and adolescence, both in our community and in the broader context of Spain and the world. At UNICEF, we are deeply committed to promoting and protecting the rights of children and adolescents, and we believe that this series of newsletters will be a valuable tool to raise awareness, inform and mobilize all sectors of society towards building a fairer, safer and more equitable environment for all our young people.

A Commitment to Childhood and Adolescence

Childhood is a crucial stage in the life of any human being. It is during these first years of life that the foundations for physical, emotional and social development are laid that will influence the rest of a person's life. Children and adolescents have the right to grow up in an environment that allows them to develop fully, where their rights are respected and where they are offered the necessary opportunities to reach their full potential.

In the Basque Country, as in many other parts of the world, we have made significant progress in creating policies and programs that seek to improve the living conditions of children and adolescents. However, we still face significant challenges, such as inequality in access to education, emerging mental health issues, and the need to create safer and more child-friendly environments.

At UNICEF Basque Country, we have been working tirelessly to promote and protect the rights of children and adolescents in our community. Our work is guided by the conviction that every child deserves the best we can offer them, and this series of newsletters is an extension of that commitment. Through this series, we will not only seek to inform about existing policies and programs, but also to generate a space for reflection and debate on how we can improve and strengthen our actions to ensure a better future for all our young people.

Sadly, these issues are pretty universal. You can front end load the system, or pay on the backend. It’s much cheaper in all levels to front end load and raise up healthy educated members of society than pay for the consequences of failing our kids. (That’s just my opinion) the video is powerful. Thanks for sharing the newsletter and video.
