Presentation delivery impact: Congruence in three key areas

So many people get it wrong. So many people lose the opportunity to change minds, win people over or simply get their point across effectively. Why? Because of incongruence when they deliver their presentation or speech.
What do I mean by congruence or incongruence? Well you need congruence in three key areas to homogenise your message and make it powerful and purposeful.
- Your vocal variety and delivery. At important points you need pauses and repetition. The tone should be lower and the pace much slower. You can speed up when you are delivering exciting news and the pitch can go up at the end of question.
- Body language, gestures and facial expressions are vitally important. You should practice in front of a mirror to ensure you smile at the right time and certainly not when presenting bad news. Your gestures should be open to show honesty and powerful to drive a point home.
- The content of the presentation should be written in a way that will make your message clear. People should not leave without understanding what action you want them to take, what changes they should encourage or what message they should take out with them. The way you structure the presentation, the visuals you choose and the words the use, especially at the beginning and end are of the utmost importance.
All three of these need to be in line throughout the presentation.
