The Present of Presence

The Present of Presence

Do you think about what you will regret at the end of your life? Pretty much guaranteed it will not be not owning that sports car or having a closet full of designer clothes. It will not be that you kept your house immaculate or binge-watched all those Netflix shows.

There might be many things you regret, but the Big One will be not being present. Present for others. Present for yourself. Present in your life. Fully experiencing whatever you are doing while you are doing it. Being here now, as Ram Das reminded us.

For a moment, imagine looking back through your life. Where were you zoning out? Was it when your children were little? When you were on vacation? How about when your grandfather was telling his long-winded stories? When finishing a meal, do you even remember tasting each bite or did you wolf it down in a daze?

Each moment is fleeting is a directive stated in all spiritual disciplines. All that exists is now, they preach.

But have you noticed, being present is easier said than done? Far too easy to get pulled into the past or fantasize about (or fear) the future.

Being present means you are focused and engaged in the moment, not distracted or mentally absent. It is recognizing your thoughts and emotions but not getting lost in them. It is finding balance between looking toward the future and pondering the past, not getting stuck in either. It is observing wishing you were doing something else, being somewhere else. It is noticing when you are triggered, but not allowing buttons to pull you away.

The key is being mindfully connected within yourself. Only then can you connect with others and with what is going on around you. It allows you to see the details of your existence and ensures that you won’t miss anything. Like your life.

Even though your primitive, fear-based consciousness believes otherwise, being present makes you a happier human. It does the same for those you are present with since that is what they want from you. That is what everyone wants.

Awareness of the present moment is all you have. It helps you navigate and ground yourself in this ever-changing and often turbulent life.

It is your responsibility to decide how to be in this world, how you show up. Sometimes it takes consciously reminding yourself, getting into a habit, pinching yourself awake.

A trick that helps is narrating as you do things. As you vacuum the floor, say to yourself, I am vacuuming the floor and I appreciate having a vacuum and a floor to keep clean. Notice your breathing, the noise of the motor, the feeling when you are done, the pride in your clean house.

Committing to be more present means asking inner questions of yourself. What am I feeling right now? What is going on in my body right now? What buttons are pushed right now? What fears or beliefs are reciting themselves right now?

Anchoring yourself in the moment allows happiness and gratitude. That is where they live.

When you are present and focused, you naturally bring love to any circumstance. It is your greatest resource, your reason for being.

You deserve to not look back over your life thinking, where was I?

Allow that to happen.

Now.
