Preparing for Winter

School is already back in session in many areas of the country, and viruses have already begun to circulate. Over the next several weeks, you’re sure to see a spike in cases of flu, colds, COVID-19, and other respiratory illnesses. As you well know, the increase in sick patients between October and May can put a strain on your clinic, often making it difficult to find enough time for everyone.?
This week we’ll focus on actions you can take now to help your clinic reduce disruption this winter. So let’s dive in. Below are six things you can do to prepare for this year’s cold and flu season.
Prepare for triage. Now is the time to get set up for an influx of sick patients. Educate your nursing and front office staff about flu signs and symptoms and how to best triage these patients. Stock up on vital supplies, such as masks, hand sanitizer, swab and specimen kits, rapid influenza diagnostic tests, COVID tests, personal protective equipment, and patient education materials. Establish standard operating procedures for managing sick patients and review them with staff now so you are prepared to take action when flu season hits. Add the consent to your check-in workflow to ease the process for your triage staff. Create standing orders to keep your flow in place as sick patients begin to enter the clinic.?
Focus on prevention. Start promoting patient vaccinations in your waiting room and exam rooms by posting signage and asking staff to remind patients that flu shots will be available this fall and COVID-19 shots are available any time. To increase compliance, make it easier than ever for patients to receive their shots when the time comes. Many clinics offer walk-in vaccine services or even a drive-through flu shot event where patients can receive the vaccine quickly in the parking lot. The easier it is to get a vaccine, the more likely your patients are to receive it.?
