Preparing for the Solar Eclipse

On April 8, the sky will grace us with a total solar eclipse! While the event promises wonder and awe, it's essential to approach it with caution, particularly regarding eye safety. Looking directly at the sun during an eclipse can result in irreversible damage to your eyes. To ensure a safe experience, here are some key guidelines to follow:?

  • Avoid using solar eclipse glasses from 2017 or earlier, as they may no longer offer adequate protection.?
  • Refrain from using telescopes or binoculars without proper solar filters, as they can intensify the harmful effects on your eyes.?
  • Invest in certified eclipse glasses or handheld solar viewers that adhere to ISO 12312-2 safety standards.?
  • Keep in mind that regular sunglasses or makeshift filters are not sufficient for eclipse viewing.?

On Thursday, April 4 from 1-3 pm, BISM and National Industries for the Blind will be distributing tactile/braille booklets in the front lobby of our Arbutus location, ensuring that individuals with visual impairments can also enjoy and understand the eclipse phenomenon. Let's celebrate the wonders of the universe while prioritizing safety and accessibility for all. #SolarEclipse #EyeSafety #Inclusion #Accessibility #BISMCommunity?
