With snow in the forecast for Wednesday and the possibility of dropping temperatures, bursting pipes becomes a very real danger. We would like to urge anyone who has lost power to shut the water and drain the pipes. If the temperature drops, that is the time that pipes become vulnerable.
Below is a checklist that can help you to prevent your house from further loss:
- If you are leaving your home or if your home is without power, shut off your water and drain your pipes
- If you have power, the threat of bursting pipes is real.
- Keep your home heated to at least 65 degrees
- Open your cabinet doors so that air can circulate around pipes
- Keep a small amount of water trickling so that water continues to circulate
- Park your car in a place that will keep it away from damage
- Check your sump pump and generator to be sure they are working properly
- Do what you can to clear your gutters from debris and ice
- Clear any snow from the entryway. Providing a clear path to your entryway can help to reduce the amount of moisture that will enter your house.
- Keep all storm drains cleared from debris to avoid flooding.
