Preparing for the Future: Implementing AI in Local Government & Future Readiness

SGR’s 10 in 10 Note – September 18, 2024

What are we going to do about AI?

AI has become firmly implanted in the mainstream consciousness. Its potential benefits are only matched by its perceived risks.

In local government, AI could help to balance limited resources with the public’s relentless demand for efficiency and effectiveness. It could be a game-changing benefit for almost every facet of local government from planning to public works and engineering to communications.

However, the use of technology in the public sector is held to a higher standard, making AI’s potential risk even greater. Add to that all the rapid-fire developments in AI technology, and it can quickly become overwhelming. But with the prominence of AI and the rise in public awareness of its potential uses, doing nothing is not going to be an option—at least not for long.

So, what are we going to do about AI? I think those who will be successful in leveraging AI to provide the greatest benefits to their communities will enlist one of the proven strengths of local governments—adaptability. It’s a strength local government leaders have honed through adapting to changes in community priorities, politics, budget considerations, and emergencies. In this case, adapting your organization to AI and putting it to work for you starts with learning. There’s help for that.
