Preparing for Final Exams with Minimal Stress

Final exams can be the most stressful time of the academic year for many students. While students should take these examinations seriously and work hard to ensure they get the best grades possible, dealing with too much stress can actually be counterproductive. Fortunately, there are ways to help students prepare for final exams with minimal stress so that they can succeed without negatively impacting their mental health in the process.

Create a Plan

The key to preparing for final exams is to create a study plan. Finals are typically either cumulative of the entire year’s lessons, or they are only based on the second half of the year. Students must devise a strategy that involves consistent studying and review of the applicable material. This plan can involve dedicating certain nights and times to studying, scheduling a tutoring session, or meeting with other classmates for a study group.

Avoid Cramming

A common mistake many students make is cramming the night before a major examination. Unfortunately, this is an ineffective study strategy that may actually be counter-intuitive to knowledge retention. Instead, students should work on spreading their studying out across multiple days so that they can properly review and practice concepts on an adequate schedule.

Get Enough Sleep

Students oftentimes find themselves staying up late to study, especially if they are cramming the night before a test. Sleep deprivation can take a massive toll on mental and physical health, and it can lead to poor performance in school. Everyone should aim to get 8 to 10 hours of sleep per night to maintain optimal brain and body health. Students should also avoid excessive and late night caffeine intake, which can further disrupt their sleep schedule.

Eat Healthy

A proper diet is necessary for both physical and mental health. Many students tend to neglect vital foods during examination periods and instead opt for fast food or snacks because they do not have time to cook or prepare healthy meals. It is important that they maintain a healthy diet with plenty of vitamins and nutrients, and they should also consider regular exercise, which can assist with concentration and stress reduction.

Maintain a Realistic Perspective

Finals often make up a large portion of a course grade, so naturally, students will be nervous when they have to take these exams. However, it’s important that students maintain a healthy and realistic perspective. Failing a final does not mean an automatic failure of the course. Students should put as much effort as they can toward excelling in their final exams, but they should not allow the stress to take over and negatively impact their mental health.
