Preparing to defend your PhD/FPM thesis? [11 questions]

Flashback to 17 January 2013, in one room three distinguished professors were shooting back-to-back questions at me and I was thinking - are these questions related to my thesis? Trust me all those questions were from my thesis and actually from any thesis in the WORLD. Here is a story and list of the questions asked during your PhD/FPM Viva.

Defending a PhD thesis is a rigorous and challenging process that involves presenting and defending your research work in front of a panel of experts. The questions you may be asked during your defence will depend on the specific topic of your thesis, your research methods, and your field of study. However, here are some potential questions that you could prepare for:

  1. What is the main contribution of your research to the field?
  2. What are the strengths and weaknesses of your research methodology?
  3. How does your research fit into the larger context of your field of study?
  4. How did you address the limitations of your study?
  5. What are the implications of your research for practice and policy?
  6. What are the potential future directions of research in your field based on your findings?
  7. What were the most significant challenges you faced during your research, and how did you overcome them?
  8. What are some potential alternative explanations for your findings, and how did you address them?
  9. How does your research contribute to existing knowledge in your field, and how does it advance it?
  10. How did you ensure the validity and reliability of your research findings?
  11. Do you consider your findings interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary?

It's important to note that the questions you may face during your PhD thesis defence will vary based on your research topic, research methods, and the expectations of your thesis committee. It's crucial to prepare thoroughly, anticipate potential questions, and be ready to defend your research work confidently.
