Be Prepared..It's the motto of the Boy Scouts and this advice has never been more appropriate than for today's world.
Everyday I note that another domestic and international conference, sporting event, and music concert have been cancelled. I am also noting that the number of cases of the coronovirus and deaths due to it seem to be increasing worldwide.. I just saw an unnerving video of what appeared to be 20 or more bodies in body bags lying on the floor in a morgue in Iran....That is chilling.
IMAGINE
Imagine, an entire country under quarantine.... that is exactly what is happening in Italy... Imagine that professional sports teams have cancelled their season..that is exactly what the NBA and NHL have done. Major league baseball is not far behind as it has cancelled spring training, too. Imagine, disappearing supplies or rationing of supplies such as cleaning and disinfecting supplies and of all things toilet paper! It's happening. Try to imagine what will be unavailable or at best rationed next? This feels like a Michael Crichton novel. But it's not, it's today's reality.
CHECK YOUR MEDICINE CABINET AND CUPBOARD
I am NOT advocating hoarding, trying to raise fear or encourage uncivilized/inappropriate behaviors. I am advocating common sense and suggesting everyone be prepared. What does that mean? How can you be prepared? To figure out what you might need, look in your medicine cabinet and cupboard. What are the things you use on a daily basis? Do you have enough of them to get you through a month or two if supplies are limited or non-existent?
GO SHOPPING
In a nutshell, if you feel you will need supplies get them. Sufficient quantities of medications, foods, and cleaning supplies are the prime things to consider. For those folks who are not comfortable going into the grocery store/pharmacy there are a couple of options. One would be to shop online /order medications by phone or online and just go to the store and pick up your order at their drive thru. Kroger does this (for a small fee) and, I imagine most large grocery stores do this as well. The other alternative where you would not need to leave your home would be to shop online at Amazon.com or similar vendors and have your foods/supplies shipped directly to you at your home. If you are concerned about touching anything that you feel may be contaminated by the virus when you are out of your home consider wearing gloves that may be purchased at beauty supply or medical supply store.
A FINAL THOUGHT
My final thought on being prepared is this: Its better to have the things you will need to survive the virus and not need them, than to need them and not have them.
