Prepared for Destructive Weather?
by Robert T. Jordan, MBA
If not, it's time to plan and PREPARE!
Once the weather turns nasty you may be too late.
Why?
Because you may not have enough time to evacuate or seek shelter if you haven't prepared a "getaway" box. Understand that government agencies and disaster relief teams are going to be busy with the most serious hit areas. You may not get any help from others for three to five days or more.
What do you need?
You may need your important papers, insurance papers, vital medicines and medical records, water, non-perishable food, water ( a gallon a day for each person) blankets, cash, a change of clothes, including an extra pair of shoes, socks and under garments, Don't forget your toothbrush and toothpaste, bar of soap, towel and washcloth, paper towels, toilet paper. It helps to have some reading material. Be sure you have your charger for your digital instruments and computer.
If you choose to go to a local shelter, be prepared to sleep on a gymnasium floor or in a classroom. Beds and cots may not be available.
Don't forget about your pets. They'll need food, water ... and a lot of love. Be sure that the shelter will accept pets. If not, then you'll have to search for a pet friendly organization that is willing to care for them.
