Prepare your student visa application

Prepare your student visa application

Got your unconditional offer and even a scholarship to study at the University of Bristol?

The journey is right ahead, yet a student visa is a must for international students before booking your flight ???? Applying for a student visa to the UK involves several steps and the submission of various documents. Below is a general guideline drawing from my experience to help you prepare the required documents for a UK student visa.

1. Acceptance Letter (CAS - Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies)

Even when you have formally accepted your offer and paid the deposit, it will take a few days or even weeks to have your CAS issued by the university. Normally it may appear in the form of an email with the most important thing included: the CAS number to be filled in your visa application. The advice is to make your decision and make the deposit payment as soon as possible, then check your email regularly until the CAS arrives.

2. Valid Passport

Your passport must be valid for the duration of your stay in the UK with at least one blank page for the visa. The duration of a standard student visa will be 4 months longer than the course duration, so it is best to ensure that the validity of your passport meets the requirement. Besides, you may need more than just one blank page if you want further visa applications while studying in the UK (e.g. the Schengen visa).

3. Proof of Funds

As required by the UK Government, evidence that you have enough money to pay for your course and support yourself in the UK must be provided. The remaining tuition fee will be stated in your CAS. In case you have a scholarship which covers the fee partly or fully, it will be mentioned in the CAS and hence only the part which was not covered will appear. However, an amount representing the living fee for the first 9 months is essential:

Most importantly, such an amount of money needs to be stored in your savings account for at least 28 consecutive days, which is why you should prepare it as soon as possible so when your CAS arrives, the evidence of funds might be already sufficient within the required duration. The funds might be your money and also your parents', in the second case remember to attach a letter clarifying their confirmation to sponsor your studies with their signatures.

4. Proof of English Language Proficiency

Submit evidence of your English language proficiency, such as IELTS, TOEFL, or other approved English tests. Normally if you have received your unconditional offer it means you have already obtained this kind of certificate, so just put it into the application folder. Some applicants might be exempt from this requirement based on their nationality or prior education in English.

5. Academic Qualifications

Certificates and transcripts of your previous academic qualifications are required. A notarised translation will also be needed if your original documents are not in English.

6. Tuberculosis Test Results

If you are from a country where you must take a tuberculosis test, include the test results. You may also check the UK government website for a list of countries that require this test. Last year I registered for the test appointment via the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in my country, the process was very simple, yet the hospital seems to always be crowded during the peak season (likely from May or June when students are all preparing for their visa to different countries, not just the UK).

While other documents may also be provided (e.g. proof of accommodation if you already have this, scholarship letter, etc.) these are the fundamental documents to be submitted. Prior to your appointment at the Visa Application Centre to provide your biometric information, you will also need to fill the Visa Application Form on the UK Government website (then print and sign the form) as well as pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) via the online system (keep and submit the receipt).

For a successful application, please remember that requirements may vary depending on your country of origin and individual circumstances, so always check the specific guidelines provided by the UK government and your educational institution. In addition, it is best to make copies of all documents submitted in case you need to refer to them later.
