PREPARE TO SYSTEMISE YOUR WORKSPACE
?The idea of developing a decluttering mindset may seem impossible and overwhelming as you sit at your desk surrounded by clutter. But you can overcome that feeling and conquer your messy workspace and computer desktop with the simple suggestions in this article and some of my favourite declutter tips.
?I don’t know about you, but for me, clutter means I’ve lost my way with my work. My mind cannot function without a clear workspace and a clear computer desktop. I need everything in order, and I need to know where everything is, so I don’t waste time trying to find things.
My day involves many tasks that must be completed so others can do their best work. If I’m not functioning at my best, then how can they? That’s right, your disorganisation affects others in many ways that you’re probably not even aware of on a day-to-day basis.
So, how do we declutter and start thriving at work? We start with a decluttering mindset!
What IS a Decluttering Mindset?
When you feel overwhelmed and trapped by the sheer volume of “stuff” on your desk or computer, or you constantly think everything would be okay if you just had more space or apps, you’re living under a victim mentality.
Instead, you need to start thinking with a victor mindset.
Let’s talk about victim mentality first and then the decluttering victor mindset. (Hint… it’s not about the stuff…)
A Victim Mindset
· ? gives in to defeat and overwhelm
· ? refuses to believe change is possible
· ? can’t imagine any other way to work
· ? has a history of poor decision-making skills
· ? feels like everything at work is a battle to be lost
?I hear statements like the following all the time from people who suffer from victim mentality. Notice, not all of these are specific to clutter. It’s a prevalent attitude that affects every part of life.
“I just don’t have enough time!”
“I can’t find anything…”
“This document is now overdue, but I didn’t realise.”
“I’m sorry I didn’t know…”
In contrast, wouldn’t you rather think and feel like this…

“No problem! Here’s the document.”
“Look at how much I’ve achieved today!”
“I’ve got 10 mins… How can I help you?”
“Aaaah… I feel awesome in this space.”
A Decluttering Victor Mindset
· ? feels peace in clear and tidy workspaces
· ? develops strength and excellent decision-making skills
· ? is open to the possibility that life can be easier
· ? is ready to work hard and finds satisfaction in each small victory
Flipping the Switch on Your Mindset
You may feel intense overwhelm and some fear right now when you think about doing a full declutter of your workspace or computer desktop, but developing the positive mindset discussed above will make every step of decluttering so much easier and more satisfying.
Mentally Prepare to Declutter
A great decluttering job involves big picture thinking. If you can’t imagine your space as decluttered, peaceful, and comfortable to use… well, you may not keep up the momentum to finish the job.
Here are five steps to help prepare your mind for successful decluttering:
1. Start with the end in mind. So always, ALWAYS remember the goal you’re working toward.
?2. Spend time envisioning your decluttered space. How will you use it? How will you feel about the freedom of clear and clean areas?
?3. Journal your thoughts. Write out how you feel now, how you WANT to feel, and your WHY for wanting to declutter.
?4. Set a goal that is connected to greater work freedom or flexibility.
?5. Understand there will be some setbacks. Overcoming a victim mindset doesn’t happen overnight. But as you work toward your goal and fill your mind with positive thoughts, you’ll get there!
?The best advice through this decluttering is to have fun, envisage what your workspace will look like and celebrate each step!

1 年The concept of cultivating a decluttering mindset is truly transformative, especially when considering the impact it has on our workspaces and productivity. I can wholeheartedly relate to the notion that clutter can stifle one's ability to function optimally. A clear and organized workspace, both physical and digital, is paramount for effective work. What's particularly resonant in this post is the shift from a victim mentality to a victor mindset. It's a powerful reminder that our attitudes significantly influence our productivity and, by extension, how we affect others in the workplace. Embracing the decluttering victor mindset, with its emphasis on peace, decisiveness, and the belief in the possibility of an easier, more efficient work life, is a beacon of motivation. The suggested steps for mentally preparing to declutter, especially envisioning the desired end result and journaling thoughts, offer a structured approach to achieving a clutter-free and productive workspace. This journey and finding joy in it is an excellent takeaway that promises not just tidier surroundings but a more fulfilling work experience.
