Prepare for Remote Working

Prepare for Remote Working

A friend came to me lamenting how she hadn't been getting remote roles, and I asked her to send me her portfolio.

...she sent me a Google Drive file.

I was like, what??

How do you expect a recruiter to take you seriously when you don't take yourself seriously?

Can I ask you a question?

Let's say you're a recruiter. Would you waste your time checking a Google Drive file for articles? Especially the ones that ask for access, would you do that?

I'm guessing no.?

Having your portfolio online gives you an edge and shows that you take your skills seriously.?

Your online portfolio doesn't have to be fancy. You can use Contra or Journo portfolio for free.?

I've used Contra , and I currently use Journo Portfolio (still in the building phase)

I don't want to leave you hanging, so let's talk about how to use these sites:

How to use Contra

Sign up for Contra with your email. Once verified, add your name, location, professional one-liner, and skills. After that, start adding your content pieces, and you have a portfolio you can share.?

You don't have to add all your pieces, just a few important ones.

Here's my Contra link for inspiration:?Adeife Adeoye

How to use Journo Portfolio

If you're extra like me and want a real website-like portfolio, then try Journo Portfolio.?

Journo offers a basic and pro version. If you're comfortable with domains like adeifeadeoyejournoportfolio.com, then stick with the basic version. I'm not, so I upgraded to the Pro version, which costs about $2.50 - A steal.

Once you have your portfolio together, you've done 80% of the job.?

Another thing people overlook is LinkedIn.

Everyone talks about LinkedIn, but I think people are more particular about posting daily than actually working on their profiles.?

My LinkedIn profile has landed me gigs, and I don't even post daily. One of the most important sections of your LinkedIn profile is the Recommendation Section.

It's really easy to get recommendations on LinkedIn, and it goes a long way to show a recruiter that you know what you're doing and someone else loves what you're doing.

When I started with LinkedIn, I didn't know how to ask for recommendations, so I'm sure you might not either.

Here's how I get recommendations from people who I've worked with:

Hi [Their First Name]! I'm currently looking for a full-time job, and I'd appreciate it if you could write a sentence or two about your experience working with me.?

Thank you very much,

[Your First Name]

To-Do:?Sign up for Contra or Journo Portfolio and start creating your online portfolio. Use the template I shared to get recommendations from people you've worked with in the past.

I've got a journo portfolio and the interface is really nice. I'll try Contra. And yes, I must revamp my LinkedIn profile. Points taken. Thanks again
