It feels like just yesterday, back on January 14th 2020, that Windows 7 reached the end of its life. Microsoft stopped providing updates and support, including those all-important security updates. Without these, computers became far more vulnerable to viruses, and viruses mean potential hacks. Hacks can lead to hefty fines and downtime for businesses. At the time, I spent months urging my clients to upgrade their systems or replace workstations over three years old. Did they all listen? Not quite. Then the global pandemic hit, and suddenly, everyone needed a laptop to work from home.
Well, here we go again (hopefully without the pandemic!). Come October 2025, Microsoft will stop offering security updates for Windows 10, and that means it’s time to start thinking seriously about moving to Windows 11.
Why Running an Outdated Operating System Is Risky
Continuing to use an unsupported operating system like Windows 10 after the cut-off date can leave your business exposed. Without security updates, your computers will be more vulnerable to cyber threats. Viruses and hackers don’t take a day off, and without regular patches, you’re at risk of data breaches, loss of service, and even fines due to non-compliance with data protection regulations. For businesses, the risks extend to damaged customer trust and lost revenue due to downtime or compromised data.

What Should You Do?
Check Your Hardware Start by checking whether your current computers can handle the requirements of newer operating systems like Windows 11. Older machines may not be compatible, and this might mean it’s time to replace them. Generally, if your device is more than a few years old, it’s worth investigating your options.
Plan Your Budget It’s never too early to start budgeting for this transition. Allocate funds for new hardware, software, and possibly additional costs like staff training or minor operational disruptions during the switchover.
Improve Your Cybersecurity This upgrade presents a great opportunity to review and enhance your current cybersecurity measures. Ensure your new system is equipped to defend against the latest threats. If you’re unsure where to start, drop me a line, and I’ll be happy to organise an audit for you.
