Prepare For The eSIM Explosion

Now is the time to get eSIM consumer-ready and as a carrier you need to prepare. More and more eSIM-enabled mid-range handsets are coming on the market and eSIM-only handsets (no physical SIM) will be around very soon from the leading OEMs plus consumer awareness of eSIM is happening.?At 10T we have seen an explosion with our 70+ carriers downloading eSIM this year.?We just had our best ever month of downloads in June.??Even my mother asked me about eSIM the other day and she thinks I just sell SIM cards!

?Launching a consumer eSIM is complex unless you have the right partner. Traditional carrier BSS integration with an?eSIM consumer platform (SM-DP+)?can?take 3-6 months, sometimes more pending the complexity of the eSIM features the carrier defines in the scope of work.?There are approximately 35+ APIs available to integrate into a SM-DP+,?and only a minority are standard APIs defined by the GSMA to control eSIM provisioning.?The majority are propriety APIs from the SM-DP+ vendor for features that a carrier will need to build into their CRM such as reporting, data analytics, blacklist, user management etc.?So, the project cost to integrate eSIM into a BSS over 3 months in resources alone will be extensive (say 6-8 people full time).?Additional costs will come from the vendor based on the system integration requirements of the carrier, so let’s be clear, integration cost to be eSIM ready may be more than half a million dollars (USD).?Add delays with the vendor based on their SLA for response time and support hours for pre-support, the cost will add up.?Trust me, I have been there in my previous job.

?The carrier also has to purchase a SM-DP+ as well and pay for set up, annual service and support charges and download costs.?Big vendors are not cheap and only work with large or strategy carriers, small vendors are known to give an SM-DP+ away for free for year 1 as they fight for market space but free is never free! Would you really trust a vendor offering a free service, how many references do they have, how are they financed, how long will they survive in the market.?That’s what I would be asking anyway!

Salient points re: the APIs and difficulty integrating with backend systems. Have seen and heard about these difficulties from customers for the past 11 years in IoT space!
