Hey Everyone this is a friend link to my latest piece on Medium which means you can read the whole thing without having it disappear half way through!!
Its a small tribute to a composer who's work including scores, letters, photographs and over 100,000 manuscripts and orchestra parts, all of them hand written and priceless were, tragically destroyed in the terrible fires earlier this year in Los Angeles.
Arnold Schoenberg 1874-1951 was one of the most influential musicians and musical theorists of the 20th Century. Posthumously his impact is undeniable. Film composers have long used his pioneering 12-tone technique to produce dissonance and unpredictable melodies such as one of my heroes Jerry Goldsmith in his benchmark score of the 1968 film Planet Of The Apes.
The loss of these works resonated strongly with me as recent events in my life saw the loss of everything I owned or had created or nurtured and was destroyed by an unscrupulous landlord displaying his inhumanity when grasping back at his property through the eviction process.
The loss of Schoenberg's works is eminently more profound and I think personally is a cultural disaster of such magnitude I will remember it for the rest of my life.
So I wrote 'Prelude To An Ode' I hope you like it, it's from the heart.
Love
Ian
