Pregnant women in Gaza in dire need of supplies | Recent earthquakes add to crisis in Afghanistan | More
United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA)
Ensuring rights and choices for all since 1969
This week, as heavy bombardments take a devastating toll on the population of Gaza, UNFPA calls for the protection of all civilians and civilian infrastructure, including health-care facilities, health workers, patients and humanitarian workers, and for the unconditional release of all hostages. In a pair of powerful videos, health workers including the head of neonatal intensive care at Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza describe a dire need for medicines and supplies for pregnant women and babies. An average of 160 pregnant women are expected to give birth every day over the next month in Gaza, with little or no availability to health services such as emergency obstetric care. In Afghanistan, one of the more than 7,000 pregnant women affected by the recent earthquakes tells her story of survival and tremendous loss. Thanks for reading.
Thousands of people are taking shelter in Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza while the staff tries to help pregnant women and babies. Filmmaker Bisan Ouda goes inside the facility to hear directly from health workers in dire need of medicines and supplies.
Dr. Nasser Bulbul, head of the neonatal intensive care unit at Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza, describes the increasingly urgent needs of pregnant women and infants.
