Pregnancy: Acetaminophen Use May Delay Language in Girls

Acetaminophen use in pregnancy might be linked to language delay in girls, ScienceDaily reported.

Published in European Psychiatry, girls born to mothers with the highest levels of acetaminophen exposure (>6 tablets) were significantly more likely to have delay in language development at 30 months of age compared to mothers with no exposure (5.92, 95% CI 1.10–31.94). Girls from mothers in the highest urinary acetaminophen levels were over ten times more likely to have a language delay.

"Given the prevalence of prenatal acetaminophen use and the importance of language development, our findings, if replicated, suggest that pregnant women should limit their use of this analgesic during pregnancy," senior study author, Shanna Swan, PhD, of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, told the publication.
