Walking for local shopping is not only good for our health but also for the environment. By avoiding the use of a bike or car, we can save fuel and manage our own carbon footprint. According to a recent report by the UN Environment Programme, the transport sector accounts for approximately 24% of global energy-related greenhouse gas emissions. This is a significant contributor to climate change, and it is up to each of us to take action to reduce our carbon footprint.
I have made a conscious effort to walk for my local shopping within the city, and I believe that this small activity is making a positive impact on the environment. Walking instead of using a bike or car is related to one of the UN SDGs: Goal 13 - Climate Action. This goal is all about taking urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts, and reducing carbon footprint is a key component of this goal.
By avoiding the use of a bike or car for local shopping and preferring to walk instead, I have been able to reduce my carbon footprint by an estimated 260 kilograms of CO2 per year. This may seem like a small number, but if more people adopt this habit, it can have a significant impact on reducing carbon emissions and contributing to the UN SDGs.
Walking is not only an environmentally friendly option but also a healthy one. Walking is known to reduce the risk of chronic diseases, improve cardiovascular health, and boost mental health. By incorporating walking into our daily routine, we can improve our health and well-being while also contributing to a more sustainable future.
