Predictions: Interview with Audrey Scozzaro Ferrazzini, Qualcomm
Last week, we held our Predictions for 2025 and Beyond event, available to watch now . I had the pleasure of speaking with Audrey Scozzaro Ferrazzini, Vice President of Government Affairs at Qualcomm, for an industry perspective on regulation. Catch up with the interview below.
Regulation of the tech industry has been a frequent topic of Predictions for several years. The scope for more stringent guardrails has increased dramatically, notably in Europe with the Digital Markets Act (DMA).
The DMA targets seven "gatekeepers" — Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Booking, ByteDance, which owns TikTok, Meta and Microsoft — which must comply with the DMA obligations on their core platforms. Audrey explored the DMA's aims in detail, noting that fairness and interoperability are central to the legislation.
It's clear the DMA is already having an effect. For example, Audrey noted that the Opera browser has seen a peak in additional users in the past six months, Microsoft is planning to launch an app store offering, and Apple introduced support for Rich Communication Services in iOS 18, something that isn't an official obligation of the DMA (see Tech Regulation: The Turning Tide ).
However, some still have concerns about the DMA, believing it's overreaching and detrimental to consumers. Audrey was bullish, saying that if some companies aren't keen to innovate and release features in the EU because of regulation, then others will.
The discussion went further, exploring impending legislation in Japan, South Korea and Taiwan, which are being heavily influenced by the DMA, as well as the future of AI regulation and differences between the US and the EU. Make sure to watch the interview below and learn more about the future dynamics of the regulatory space.
