Predicting the future, Sex and the City, Productivity Questions + more

In November last year, I noticed a digital story with the headline "For Just $23, You Can Rent Carrie Bradshaw’s?Sex And The City Apartment".

The headline ticks all the boxes: curiosity, surprise, and above all a promise of spending a night with Carrie's designer shoe collection.

But this time, 10/10 headline craftsmanship wasn't the reason I clicked faster than my dog runs to the car when he hears a bunch of keys jangling.

It was because we'd predicted this nostalgia-staging trend way back in 2015; that consumers of the future might want to relive their fantasy version of the 'good old days' played out in the form of living like Monica and Rachel, holidaying like Baby and Johnny, or even partying like Carrie Bradshaw.

Back then, we wondered if there was a business model where you could charge a premium price for re-creating TV famous living spaces as a rental experience, and thinking the home-stager role might see some niche specialists pop up with the job title of "nostalgist" (that bit hasn't quite happened yet, to my knowledge!)

We made quite a few other predictions in 2015 about what real estate in 2020 would look like. I had meant to revisit this time capsule in 2020, but we got kind of preoccupied with reporting lockdowns and eviction moratoriums, as we all know.

So the book gathered a bit more dust than anticipated, but I decided to open the box last week to see how we did. And for a few people that are not really into crystal balls, we got quite a bit right.

In 2015, I thought 2020 was so far away. But we blinked, had a pandemic, and we actually missed it. People are saying 2025 is a long way away, but it isn't. Someone reminded me yesterday that 2050 is actually closer now than 1990 was.

Here are some of my other favourites this week.

1. Something old

When people ask me about marketing to the real estate industry, we inevitably end up having a chat about whether their product or your message is a vitamin or a pain killer. One means success. The other, well, results may vary.

This article explains it really well.

2. Something new

If you are looking for innovation inspiration, look no further than Scott Bateman. Here are some highlights of the podcast I recorded with him this week.

The full podcast ep is here.

3. Something borrowed

Kevin Kelly - (famous for the 1000 true fans idea) turned 70 recently and wrote another one of his equally famous "Bits of advice I wish I had known" pieces. I loved, "When you lead, your real job is to create more leaders, not more followers...". The other 102 pearls of wisdom are here.

4. Something ... you should do ??

Repeatedly ask yourself some good questions. I really like these 8 "on-purpose-productivity" type questions from Josh Spector, particularly the one that asks, "What would it look like if it were easy?"
