Predict Future Performance by Checking References

Predict Future Performance by Checking References

Checking references?should be more than just a formality during your hiring process. This is your opportunity to learn more about a candidate’s history directly from people who know them well.

Here are some strategies to help you maximize the value of references provided by your candidates:?

  • ?Ask questions directly related to the position for which you are hiring, including questions about skills, technology, ethics, problem-solving, and how they approach challenges.
  • Gather information about how the candidate performed on projects individually and in groups, how they interacted with team members, and what leadership capabilities they demonstrated.?
  • Get insight into significant achievements they had in past roles and how these impacted the company.?

Learning about prior performance from references is a great way to predict future performance and determine a candidate’s fit for your company. Take advantage of this great opportunity to learn as much as possible about your prospective employees!

This way to check a reference is gold for future hires. ·????????Gather information about how the candidate performed on projects individually and in groups, how they interacted with team members, and what leadership capabilities they demonstrated.?

Sorry, but this is rubbish. First of all, no candidate is going to provide a reference that will not be glowing, regardless of what their actual past performance is. Second (and related), references are entirely subjective, not any kind of objective measure. That's why my industry does not permit them, it can open the companies to liability. Any employee asked for a reference is required by policy to provide the number to HR who will only verify dates of employment.

This makes total sense. Make sure you have not only up-to-date references but people you can list for specific jobs. If you've ever gotten recognized by a Colleague, or former one, make sure you're connected here on LinkedIn, give them a Recommendation if you deem it worthy and maybe you'll get one back. If for some reason they are not on LinkedIn, look through the contacts on your phone/ email address book and see if there are any you can reach out to, grab a coffee with them to reconnect. You never know who might have the inside track on a great opportunity. Last thing I want to be a victim of is " I wish I had kept in touch with ......".

Keep your references close. And, always prepare them for a call if you are job seeking.
