Pre-Tour Support: Another Life & Guldimund

Sustainable Workgroups is a service designed to benefit any temporary or long-term workgroup that wants to create more socially sustainable processes and work environments. This could be touring artist teams, project teams, or even more permanent teams working in organisations and companies. Another Life offers support in facilitating nuanced conversations about competencies, needs, values, and frameworks for the work environment through tailored workshops. The workshops are designed to offer actionable tools to implement throughout the process, with the possibility to evaluate and adjust if necessary.

Personalised Workshop

An example of the format is a touring preparation workshop Another Life conducted with the artist Guldimund, the band, and the technical staff to prepare them for their tour and assist them in handling associated tasks in a socially and sustainable manner. This workshop format involved presenting the theory and methods that anchor Another Life's work to help the band put it into practice through guided exercises, both individually and in groups.

As workshops can be tailored for the specific needs of the work group, for Guldimund, this meant having a focus on the working environment, and common language and settling on a framework for work-life balance. Through exercises, we helped highlight what constitutes a good work environment for them as a group.

Summarising the data

Using different methods, we summarised the points from the workshop and gathered them as material and resources for the group to use on their tour, including an evaluation process to monitor the effectiveness of their workshop goals. As a result, Guldimund left the workshop with five key focus areas agreed upon by the group, based on their needs.

Points to consider

As the workshop summary is specific to Guldimund, facilitating a workshop in this way presents some valuable insights that may benefit others:

  • Firstly, individuals often articulate their needs differently, but by examining each one, common group needs emerge.
  • Initially, certain issues may appear minor, which can lead to hesitancy in addressing them. However, openly discussing these matters often reveals that many in the group share the same concerns, emphasising that they are actually major concerns rather than minor ones.
  • A facilitator can help bring these perceived minor concerns and needs to light, particularly taking into account the power dynamics within the group.
