Pre-hiring tests are growing more common—and they can take many different forms
When searching for a new job, the pre-hiring test is both a positive step forward and a stressor. On the one hand, you have moved ahead to an important part of the hiring process that not many candidates reach, but test anxiety can quickly creep in and throw you off your game.
In his recent story for Forbes, contributor Sho Dewan outlined tips to help you navigate these exams , and the first piece of advice he covers is simple yet important: understand the test.
Dewan writes that cognitive ability tests, which aim to give recruiters and hiring managers a glimpse at a candidate’s mental abilities, are among the most common forms of the pre-hiring test. One example is the Wonderlic Personnel Test , which businesses use to “identify people who have the ability to learn, understand instructions, adapt, solve problems and make decisions.” Being able to filter for candidates with these qualities is a major help to hiring teams.
Some HR departments might care more about company culture, and there are tests for culture fit as well. Personality tests like the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator Test and the DISC Assessment can help provide a look at a candidate's personality traits and behavioral preferences.
Still others will go the more specialized route. Candidates looking for an editing job should expect to take some sort of mock editing assignment, while a software developer might be provided with a code test or programming tasks to complete. And some companies will even give candidates’ trial work, which involves tasks similar to what their future day-to-day assignments could look like. This type of test lets employers “directly observe how candidates perform tasks as if they were already hired to do the job.”
Knowing what kind of test (or tests) to expect when you’re in the running for a position will help boost your confidence as you prepare to take the test. If you’re prone to test anxiety, there are also ways to prepare, which Dewan outlines in his article . Make sure to give it a read!

7 个月In my field and mostly for medical coding there is usually a test to take for just about every position. The downside is the tests are usually created by the recruiter that doesn’t have working knowledge to understand what they’re creating. I’ve taken coding tests and failed because the tests aren’t accurate. I’ve had to screenshot the wrong answers and send it back with a reason explaining why it’s wrong. This happens too often and unfair to the applicants.
Understanding the type of pre-hiring test you'll encounter can indeed give you an edge in your job search. Preparation is key to success!

Besides people with neurodiversities will be let down by that type of test. I am not against test to proof your skills and abilities but we need to be mindful or you lose out other abilities
