Pre- COP28 View and Review

Firstly, can we continue to celebrate that Kenya held the Africa Climate Summit 2023? Yaay!

As we approach COP28, the urgency to address climate change has never been more apparent. Kenya, a nation renowned for its diverse ecosystems and commitment to sustainable development, stands at the forefront of this global challenge. As a Monitoring and Evaluation expert, I am compelled to shed light on innovative approaches that NGOs and CSOs can promote and emulate, emphasizing the critical need for climate investments in climate-led solutions, particularly in the realms of fishing, carbon removal, and capture.

1. Sustainable Fishing Practices: A Path to Resilient Fisheries

Kenya's coastal communities rely heavily on fisheries for sustenance and livelihoods. Overfishing, illegal practices, and the impacts of climate change pose significant threats to this crucial sector. NGOs can play a pivotal role in promoting sustainable fishing practices through community-based initiatives. Implementing and supporting programs that encourage responsible fishing, the establishment of marine protected areas, and the use of climate-resilient aquaculture practices can safeguard fisheries for us and future generations.

To add on the same, as this is a sector I work in, in my organization, we would be appalling to be blind to the effects of these on women and girls. In a place where we mention sustenance and livelihoods, women and girls become more vulnerable. This is not to mention the exploitations done upon them over and above and obvious risk factor of not managing mobility and a myriad of other lack of access when it comes to this.

Collaborative partnerships between NGOs, local communities, and government agencies can amplify the impact of initiatives, ensuring the sustainability of fisheries while enhancing the resilience of coastal ecosystems.

2. Carbon Removal and Capture: Nurturing Nature for a Greener Future

Kenya has made strides in addressing deforestation and land-use changes, recognizing their role in climate change. However, more needs to be done to enhance carbon removal and capture. NGOs can champion reforestation and afforestation projects, working closely with local communities to restore degraded landscapes and establish carbon sinks.

Innovative financing mechanisms, such as carbon offset programs and partnerships with private industries, can provide the necessary resources for large-scale initiatives. Agroforestry, sustainable land management practices, and the promotion of renewable energy sources are additional avenues for NGOs to contribute to the reduction of carbon emissions. By investing in nature-based solutions, NGOs can not only mitigate climate impacts but also foster biodiversity, water conservation, and sustainable agriculture.

3. Community-Centric Climate Investments: The Key to Lasting Change

To ensure the success of climate-led solutions in Kenya, community engagement and empowerment must be at the forefront of NGO initiatives. By involving local communities in the design and implementation of climate projects, NGOs can tailor solutions that resonate with the unique needs and challenges of each region.

Climate investments should extend beyond infrastructure to include capacity building, education, and the creation of sustainable livelihood opportunities. Empowered communities are more likely to embrace and sustain climate-resilient practices, creating a ripple effect that transcends generations.

A Collaborative Call to Action

As we stand on the precipice of COP28, let us recognize the power of collaboration and innovation in addressing climate change. Non-governmental organizations have a pivotal role in driving transformative change in Kenya. By championing sustainable fishing practices, investing in carbon removal and capture initiatives, and prioritizing community-centric climate investments, NGOs can pave the way for a resilient and sustainable future.

The time for action is now. Together, let us make COP28 a turning point in the fight against climate change, where innovative solutions and strategic investments propel Kenya towards a greener, more sustainable tomorrow.
