Praxis Pulse - Edition 8: The Journey

Adventure Time

The past several weeks have been full of adventure, as they always are for the Praxis team. We’ve seemingly traveled the state of Montana, working through government contracting, presenting on healthcare simulation operations, diving deep into metrics and data collection, and collaborating with passionate simulationists from across the state. It’s been a whirlwind of awesomeness, and we’re thrilled to share some of our highlights with you.

End Sepsis: A Partnership for Life-Saving Advocacy

This September, as part of Sepsis Awareness Month, the Praxis Team had the honor of meeting with Ciaran Staunton and Orlaith Staunton , the founders of END SEPSIS, the Legacy of Rory Staunton here in Butte. END SEPSIS was born from an unthinkable tragedy—the loss of their 12-year-old son Rory to sepsis, a preventable and undiagnosed condition. Since its founding in 2012, END SEPSIS has led the charge in sepsis advocacy, public policy, and education, fighting to ensure that no more lives are lost to this treatable disease.

Rory's story is a powerful reminder of the importance of simulation-based education for healthcare providers, particularly in recognizing and treating sepsis. At Praxis, we are committed to supporting this goal by implementing training programs that teach sepsis recognition and response in rural hospitals, clinics, and even pre-hospital care. With the help of simulation, we can better prepare healthcare professionals to act quickly and decisively, improving patient safety and outcomes.

Laerdal Mini-SUN Conference

The Laerdal Mini-SUN Conference at Rocky Vista University - Montana campus in Billings, MT, was an incredible success.?

Over 40 healthcare simulationists gathered for this one-day event on September 27th. We were privileged to attend powerful presentations from Carrie Miller , Becky Anglin DNP, RN Tim Russom , Daisy Collins and Joe Poole . The conference emphasized the vital role that simulation plays in improving healthcare outcomes, especially in Montana’s rural areas.

Phillip Wortham, MBA, BA, CHSOS-A and Ray Rogers were thrilled to share their work in using metrics and data collection to drive outcomes in healthcare simulation. Ray’s deep expertise in healthcare informatics with the National Center for Healthcare Informatics ( Novare ) helped to shape many discussions about the future of healthcare simulation data utilization.

Montana Apex Conference

In Lewistown, the Praxis Center team had the chance to participate in the Montana APEX Accelerator Conference, where we listened to Matthew Moriarty speak on subcontracting and teaming insights for federal contracts. This event provided valuable knowledge that we’ll use to strengthen our participation in national contracting efforts. These partnerships not only support the growth of Praxis but also contribute to the economy of Montana and Butte's Uptown district. We are excited about the opportunities that lie ahead!

Scary Statistics

As we step into October, Praxis has launched its “Scary Statistics” campaign, focusing on rural health and the challenges faced by healthcare systems across the nation. From staffing shortages to delayed diagnoses, rural communities face an array of latent threats to patient safety—many of which go unnoticed until it’s too late.

Healthcare simulation offers a powerful solution to these problems. By identifying latent threats in care systems through realistic, scenario-based training, we can address gaps in provider knowledge, response times, and resource allocation. Simulation empowers healthcare teams to work through complex situations, ensuring they’re prepared to meet the unique demands of rural healthcare and improve patient outcomes. As we share these “scary statistics” throughout the month, our goal is to raise awareness and spark action towards a safer, more resilient healthcare system.
