In Praise of Common Decency
Considering the contentious rhetoric of this election season, it’s time to reclaim the value of civility to address problems in business and society at large.
I encourage leaders to emphasize decency as one of the most valuable traits for any employee to demonstrate. Your organization should appreciate decency as much as, if not more than, any other value or competency. For example:
- Commit to upholding decency with fellow executives and throughout the entire organization.
- Promote mutual respect and trust by demonstrating them consistently.
- Hire people who believe in your mission, value teamwork and demonstrate respect.
- Emphasize that clients, customers, patients and business partners deserve courtesy, regardless of staff members’ circumstances, background, belief or opinions.
- Do not shield those who defy your organization’s culture of decency.
Right now, this is where leaders need to spend their time and energy.
I explore this topic further in my most recent column for Becker’s Hospital Review. Read it here.
