THE PRAGMATIST

There are Five Critical Leadership Archetypes every enterprise must have to succeed.???

WHAT you do.? These are PRODUCERS.? The ability to be functional.

HOW you do it. These are ADMINISTRATORS.? The ability to be efficient.

WHY you do it.? These are ENTREPRENEURS.? The ability to be proactive.

WHO does it.? These are INTEGRATORS.? The ability to bring people together.

WHEN it gets done. These are PRAGMATISTS or DIPLOMATS.? The ability to be realistic and practical.

This post is about The Pragmatist. Or Diplomat.

When I was a senior in high school, one of my best friends literally said to his mother:

Please don't talk to me, I don't know you.??No,? I don't care if you held me at birth. I have no clue who you are”

I thought he was joking.? He was not.??

I’m sure he celebrates January 2nd, known as? World Introvert Day.? Why January 2nd?? It marks the end of the holiday season and allows introverts to take a breather from social gatherings.

I'm a total extrovert. Of course I never heard of this.

This was the brainchild of German psychologist Felicitas Heyne.? She wrote a blog post in 2011 Here's Why We Need a World Introvert Day.??

And now its a thing.? Good for her.??

I'm sure most people would consider Albert Einstein a smart guy.

Albert Einstein had sixty nominations, over ten years for the Nobel prize.? Most of them for relativity,

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences continuously rejected him.? Only in 1922 did finally give him the prize, though not for his theory of relativity.?

The Nobel prize committee blocked him because?

1. They couldn’t understand relativity theory.? Einstein was theorist.? He never did experiments.

2. He was a Jew.? Not popular at the time.? He was also a pacifist. Also not very popular at that time.

For Einstein, the award meant little to him by the time he received it, except for the money he had promised his wife Mileva in their divorce agreement.?

He never attended his award ceremony nor deliver a lecture to the Swedish Academy on the topic of relativity.

Einstein was the classic Pragmatist.

The Introverted Genius

THE CHARACTERISTICS OF A PRAGMATIST

Pragmatists are introverted, people oriented and process information slowly.

They crave certainty, they dislike risk. They are calm, steady, grounded, realistic, and amiable.? But they always let others take the lead.

They prefer communicating one on one, rather than in a group.

While they appear to be quiet and reserved, their internal world is deep and rich. They don’t like emotion, chaos or disorder.?

People often don’t know what they’re thinking or feeling. They are the paradigm of stoicism.?

They communicate in a patient, thoughtful way. People find them safe and easy to talk to.?

They are the voice of reason.

They are great listeners.

They don't like to be rushed in their decision making. They get very quiet around extroverts or anyone who speaks loudly or talks fast.?

To make decisions they need time to put thought into it. They don’t like to be rushed.? They rely on themselves and their past knowledge.?

Their greatest gift is they are the Voice of Reason.? They are down to earth and pragmatic about what can be done.

Their deepest wound is losing their voice.? In all areas of their life.

They believe that what they have to say does not matter.? They tend to not ask for what they want or need.

They rarely speak up in groups, especially with people they don't know.

IF YOU ARE AN INTROVERT, A PRAGMATIST:?

To become more Personally Productive embrace change. Find your voice in all matters of your life. Step out in front when you feel comfortable and share your thoughts.?

Before going into a meeting where you need consensus, create prior agreements with each member to mitigate chaos or disorder. .

The keys to Personal Growth is to find a way to process long dormant emotions that can be triggered by others.??

Learn how to manage uncertainty.? The quality of your life will be in direct proportion of the amount of uncertainty you can live with at any given time.

The challenge in working with a team is that you dislike conflict. You prefer harmony over problem solving.?

You never like to be out front.? You allow the most dominant person take charge, even if you know the decisions are bad.

WHEN WORKING WITH PRAGMATISTS:

  • Focus on their strengths: They can be good listeners and make observations that others might miss.
  • Create boundaries: Pragmatists have difficulty setting boundaries, so it's important to help them create them.
  • Pragmatists can be great mentors because they are good listeners and observers, and can provide valuable advice to aspiring leaders.
  • Give them time: Pragmatists can be great decision-makers because they listen and reflect.? They are calm and composed when facing challenges.
  • Delegate individual tasks and projects: Delegating tasks to them can help pragmatists, especially remote workers,? engage more with the problem.
  • Don't make assumptions. You have no idea what they are thinkiing or feeling.
  • Meet consistently with them one-on-one.
  • Don't ask their opinions on the spot.? Give them time to process information.
  • Don't ignore them.?
