Practicing What We Preach

At ZeroMils we like to talk about the 5 things every #Veteran and #militaryspouse needs to thrive. Beyond preaching these principles we firmly believe that "actions speak louder than words." As we enjoy Easter Weekend with our families and celebrate something else our team believes in deeply, we're sharing our week in review and the 5 components of #MilitaryThriving.

Connected Community?

ZeroMils joined Hope for the Warriors for the grand opening and ribbon cutting for the new Hope For The Warriors Military Lounge at Albert J. Ellis Airport, which serves the military and Veteran community adjacent to Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, where coincidentally Kevin and Paul served and #thrived together 20+ years ago.??

Meaningful Employment?and Small Business Ownership

ZeroMils partnered with the NVC and ThunderCat Technology at their HQ, in Reston, VA for the second in a series of quarterly NOVA VetNet events for 2024. Speakers shared their experience as entrepreneurs building small businesses in the private sector, and how their time in the military influences their careers and motivates them to continue to support the Veteran community to help others thrive. More than? 50 people, including Kevin and Paul,? joined the session to hear the fantastic speakers including Lawrence Nunn, Co-founder and CEO, Cyberspacial; Jo McCabe, Owner, Mr. Handyman of Northern Virginia - Arlington to Haymarket; Tom Deierlein, CEO, ThunderCat Technology; and Dwight Hunt, Founder and former CEO, B3 Group.

Finding Purpose Through Continued Service

Kevin, Paul and Monica enjoyed visiting Gold Star Mother and longtime friend Janice Chance as they made the most of Monica’s quick trip to the DMV. We met Janice through our work together at Operation Gratitude , where Janice was an active volunteer and one of a dozen Ambassadors nationwide. Janice continues to inspire others as she lives out the value of finding purpose through service to honor the legacy of her son, Marine Captain Jesse Melton, who was killed in Afghanistan on September 9, 2008. Janice is full of thriving light and love, and anyone who spends an hour with her comes away from the encounter ready to take on the rest of the day with joy and purpose!?

Health

Team ZeroMils has joined the Piestewa Challenge and have already racked up 92.5 miles toward our goal of 200 miles by the end of the month! wear blue: run to remember dedicates the month of March to telling the stories of women in military service and closes with a challenge, the Piestewa Challenge, that specifically honors the women who gave their lives in Military Service. This effort is inspired by the sacrifice of SPC Lori Ann Piestewa. SPC Piestewa is the first Native American woman service member to be killed in combat on foreign soil, as well as the first female service member killed in Iraq.

Kit Bag

Filling our “Kit Bags” with all of the other things we need to thrive (and helping? others do the same) is something we do on a daily basis. At the very heart of that is mentoring and encouraging other Veterans and military spouses to constantly seek self improvement. This week’s mentoring sessions included several nonprofit leaders, visionaries like Lydiah Owiti-Otienoh , and a half dozen aspiring small business owners.?

I love how the 5 pillars intersect with each other while also being as important on their own. It is a great honor to be a recipient of this team’s dedication and easy going approach to creating a #MilitaryThriving culture, and hope to play my part in helping others along their journey! Thank you ZeroMils!
