PRACTICE OF SOLITUDE & GETTING TO KNOW YOURSELF

My Colleagues, a good day to you.

Last night as I was heading off to bed, it came to my mind to ask you this question..."How well do you know yourself?"

A strange question as it may seem, but a very pertinent and crucial one indeed, if we are to align our internal GPS to the external opportunities which present itself.

So how do we get to know ourselves?

By SPENDING TIME with ourselves of course. You see, if we want to get to know someone, we will need to SPEND TIME with them in knowing them better and better, which is a fact.

Well, the same applies to ourselves...yes, we need to spend time with ourselves.

99% of humanity thinks it knows itself but IT DOESN'T...all because they have always crammed their lives and minds with a combination of the following:

Other People,

Preoccupations/Career,

Commitments;

Distractions,

Entertainment;

Hobbies; etc......to the point, they have NO TIME for themselves.

For so many, the thought of being STILL and REFLECTING on themselves and the situations they are faced with in gaining perspectives and even just RESTING their minds and their souls is something unheard of and maybe even weird!

Hence, so many of their decisions and outlook on life are based on their feelings and hence incur the risk of decisions made which do not work out well in the long run, because our feelings cannot be relied upon.

We need to realise that our feelings are "good followers" but TERRIBLE "masters".

Psychologists and management "gurus" of the world have been driving the message on the need to practice solitude, again and again over the years because they have realised the value of spending time with ourselves in reflection and inner rest, based on studies and observations over the years.

However, the need for us to be STILL in a REFLECTIVE mode, and simply enjoying our solitude was instituted by our Maker Himself, when He said from Psalm 46:10 " Be still, and know that I am God."

Our personal efficiency, mental and emotional health have the potential of improving considerably as we make SOLITUDE a practice...even if it starts with 5 minutes a day...it is so vital.

Further, in the process, we end up engaging with our inner self and getting to really know ourselves better, which in turn significantly helps us gain valuable perspectives in our decision making and approach to challenging situations in life & work.

Hence, we need to start practising taking time off to reflect and in being still on a consistent basis, if we are not already doing so, given its significant benefits to our spirits, souls and bodies.

Further, when we combine our "Solitude" with "Communion with God & His Word"....there is no telling how much more blessed and empowered we become.
