Practice, Patience, and Presence (A Path to Connected Communication)
Feeling like your voice is stuck?
You’ve got all the tips and techniques.
You’ve practiced.
But when you speak… something feels off.
Your confidence falters.
The words don’t land.
What’s going wrong?
You’re not alone.
Many people are struggling to connect—whether with large groups or even one-on-one.
COVID disrupted more than our social rhythms.
It pulled us apart.
We returned to "normal" without fully processing what happened.
Now, many feel disconnected… less grounded.
Some have even lost confidence, unsure how to fully show up like they once did.
Here’s the thing:
It might not be about skill at all.
It’s about readiness.
And readiness can be cultivated.
I think of Serene Jones’ words: “How do you preach resurrection to an imagination traumatized?”
In other words: How do you lead when your capacity to act feels shaken?
It’s easy to think you’re “not good enough.”
But maybe… you’re just not feeling grounded.
This is where I start with my clients.

No surface-level quick fixes. No shortcuts.
We build a foundation.
Curiosity over criticality.
Are you grounded enough to express your truth?
Can you imagine showing up as your authentic self?
Without this foundation, all the strategies in the world may fall away when fear creeps in.
But when fear shows up… That’s when your practice kicks in.
Your groundedness brings you back. Presence returns.
You reconnect.
The confidence and connection you’ve been building will be there for you, even when things feel shaky.
Want to feel more grounded?
Here’s how:
? Ground yourself before you speak. Feel your feet on the floor. Slightly forward on the balls of your feet. Heels still touching. Even on Zoom, keep one foot anchored to the ground. This helps you stay connected.
? Get curious about your feelings. Notice when fear shows up. Acknowledge it: “Oh, that’s interesting.” Lean in a little. Focus on something outside yourself—like a person’s expression or the light in the room. Stay present.
? Breathe. Inhale on your inspiration, exhale on your expression. Slow, deep breaths. Feel them rise from your belly… or even your feet. Breathing through your nose can calm anxiety. Steady, slow breath wins the day.
? Practice connection. Engage with others in small, low-stakes ways. Start with a smile. Make eye contact. Say hello to someone new. Express gratitude to a stranger. Every connection strengthens your ability to show up in bigger moments.
The joy in this process? Once you ground yourself, your voice and leadership will emerge naturally.
It’s not about getting it “right” from the start.
It’s about discovering what’s already working—and building from there.
Your voice matters.
Let’s celebrate the unfolding of your true self, step by step.

5 个月I love this Mia. The advice you gave recently in the Storied workshop was absolute gold. You gave shape to a lot of things I've learned from experience. Deep breathing and intention setting is so important. So many people experience anxiety about speaking, and it can be debilatating. In other cases it's so obvious when people are telling a story they've told many times before and not connected enough to the audience they're telling it to for the first time.
