The Practice of Practice

Dear Friends,
Part of discerning what is conducive to liberation, and letting go of what isn’t, entails a commitment to practice. Through practice, we develop the ability to respond rather than react, to be more aware of what is actually happening, and to disrupt unhelpful patterns and responses that do not serve us. Practice helps us align with experiences of fluidity, balance, clarity, space, and joy amidst whatever is going on.
So, how does one go about practicing?
Real liberatory practice takes substantial effort and care. It’s easy to pick a practice, work with it for a bit, and feel like it’s not doing anything. However, the most important practices require a lot of time and dedication to experience the impact. I practiced meditation for over ten years before I felt what is called meditative stability – a feeling that my awareness was steady enough to maintain focus and presentness at will.
Curious to learn more and practice with me? The New Saints tour continues this week in the East Coast, followed by Europe, with plenty of virtual events as well. I’m especially excited to invite folks who are seeking to engage their commitment to practice in a supportive community environment to check out my upcoming retreats in Portugal and Colorado.?
I hope to see you soon in-person or online! Let’s explore together what the practice of practice means.
With care and dedication,
Lama Rod
In my book, The New Saints: From Broken Hearts to Spiritual Warriors, I offer some guidelines that have been helpful in supporting my commitment to personal and community practice. While we may feel a sense of urgency, especially with all that is going on in our lives personally and collectively, it is important to remember that the movement and effort towards liberation is not done overnight. By committing to our practice, we can intentionally take it step by step in building our inner focus, presence, and stability, and that will serve us in the long run. Join me in practice on the path towards becoming a New Saint.
