How to get to Carnegie Hall. That 10,000 hours thing. Supposedly "it" makes perfect? Well, perfect might be a lofty goal, but there's no doubt that the more you #practice what you do, the better you become at doing it. And the same goes for #voiceover as with any other trade, field or creative endeavor. Practice can help turn things you may usually struggle doing into something closer to "second nature". Age old adages aside, the more you do it, the less you think about doing it. It's part of the reason I'm such a mediocre guitar player: I don't practice enough.
I'm a natural at "slightly off-center", but practice is the road to "always on-target".
I read road signs and billboards aloud when I drive by myself; constantly talk to myself as different voices, personas, & characters; and repeat phrases from TV & radio ads all throughout the day. It's more than just letting out all the voices in my head (but that's definitely part of it).
This weekend I'm fortunate to be able to practice with others, while at this workshop led by booth director extraordinaire Everett Oliver, and hosted by Abacus Entertainment in NYC. And I can't wait for some of those voices in my head to get some extra practice! I may not know how to get to Carnegie Hall, but I can add a couple days towards those 10,000 hours.
