In Susan Steinbrecher’s post on “Four Emotional Intelligence Skills to Call Upon When the Stakes are High,” she describes the importance of equilibrium when you want to get through a high stakes conversation.
Susan identifies the need to successfully balance your emotional state, bringing a state of calm and composure…or equilibrium. As I read this, it reminded me of a practice that I have only recently been introduced to. It is the Jesuit practice of “detachment“ or “indifference.”
This idea can be understood as the capacity to let go of what doesn’t help me, and stay engaged with what does help me. In other words, you achieve equilibrium and are able to let things go that do not contribute to achieving your purpose. Read more...
