Practicality

Practicality

Impacting knowledge without jargon or over complications is one of the key skills any expert must acquire if they are to pass on their expertise. Doing so in a practical way is imperative because what we want are practical results.?
(Prof. Damian Hughes)

Being Practical

  • Great leaders understand that while they themselves are able to understand what they mean, abstraction makes it harder to understand an idea and to remember it.?
  • It makes it harder to coordinate our activities with others who may interpret the abstraction in very different ways.
  • Practical language helps us avoid these problems.?
  • So, as leaders, what matters is not only what we know, but how simple and clearly we can communicate it to those who need to grasp it in order to succeed.

So you see that practicality is about bringing the abstract to reality.?

Why Is It Important?

Simplicity + Practicality = Understanding

Understanding leads to:

  • Remembrance
  • Commitment
  • Ownership
  • Responsibility

...which translates to a Winning Culture.

Note:

  • Practical language is powerful in aiding understanding and remembrance. It helps to bring your core vision from the realm of abstract to the realm of reality.?
  • Whether it is a form of creative interaction or rehearsal, or experiment or practice session, or drill or exercise. Whatever is practically demonstrated will always stick.

Basic Things To Keep In Mind

  • Often a simple practical message is all it takes especially because most time team members are ‘novice’ to our ideas; we are the experts. They don’t know what we know.?
  • So the key is to find a universal language; one that everybody speaks fluently. Inevitably, that universal language will be practical.

Fact: Research has shown that jurors in a court room are often struck by lawyers’ personalities and factual details and the court room rituals; the very rituals they are to avoid but rather weigh the current case against the abstract lessons in past cases and legal precedent.
