Practical opportunities for mmWave 5G in Europe

On September 30th, Nicolas Waegner and myself, presented a mmW webinar, with Guy Daniels of TelecomTV as moderator. This was part of the Qualcomm Summit and you can find the links to both presentation and Q&A sessions below.

We covered a lot of ground and answered a lot of questions also from the public. I encourage you to watch the whole thing but here are some highlights from the presentation!

We discussed status of #5G and #mmW deployments around the world, with a focus on #Europe. Can't help but highlight the highly anticipated launch of #Fastweb #FWA #mmW launch in Italy later this year! A lot more coming soon with commercialization in Russia, and operators in Finland. In Finland each of the 3 major carrier got 800MHz in the Summer, and more spectrum is expected to be released in other countries in coming months!

We then discussed the already large and developing ecosystem of devices supporting mmW. Everything you see below supports mmW and all are powered by Qualcomm tech; apps processors, modems and RF sub systems!

The following slide presents our latest offering which will power a lot of what comes to market next year!! The Snapdragon SDX60 modem and RF System + fully integrated mmW antenna modules, with multi-band support for 26GHz, 28GHz, and 39GHz.

Nick dived into deployment scenarios showing mmW performance from simulations and field results. I will only show here a small subset as highlights.... you can find a lot more in the video.

Below you can see a Qualcomm building in San Diego, CA were we deployed a mmW gNB as you see in the photos. In the good old days (last year!) I was there and that was the first time I saw mmW deployed in a setting like this. Multigigabit speeds indoor became a reality (for me)!

The following shows recent outdoor mmW measurements but it reminds me of the early days of mmW research back in our New Jersey office when at this location our mmW "mobile" was as big as a small fridge(!) and our engineers were using a trolley to move around as we were working to mobilize mmW!! We have come a long way since then!

This brings us to today!

This below is a new record recently shown in the US! We closed a >100Mbps mmW link at >5Km away with our latest mmW Fixed Wireless Access solution!

mmW is just getting started... looking forward to seeing it getting utilized in Europe!

Thank you for reading. Stay safe!
